client: Philips
Company Description: Royal Philips International is a $35 billion global company, and their Home & Body division is one of the world's largest manufacturers of kitchen, home, personal health, and bathroom appliances. However, while the company basically owns the European markets, they're not as dominant in the U.S. (where they go by both the Philips and Norelco brand names). But on any continent, they make pretty awesome, incredibly well-designed gadgets and appliances.

(It was an absolutely huge project).

In addition to helping organize, architect and layout the site, I sifted through and audited every piece of marketing information Philips had—and it was by far the most extensive library I've seen, with shelves of content. My role was to become a marketing reference (essentially: soak up the brand) for the different Philips products (from shavers to vaccuums to coffee makers), so that I could help steer the content development for the site—which I did.

I also participated in some later stages of the project, writing both technical/back-end user guides, some of the site's value added content, b2b-focused self-service portals, and customer care copy.

The Results: You can imagine the challenge we faced, creating such a global site for so many specific countries, customs, languages, and products. But looking around the depth of the site now, it's pretty impressive how it all came together—and how well-respected and true the various Philips brands come across.

  • Philips Home & Body: The site is country-specific, so you may have difficulty accessing all of the Philips products from a U.S. location—but much of my work was on a base-level branding and architectural level. So surf around the site to get a feel for its depth, and how it draws you in, yet gets grainier and more detailed the further you delve.
