client: Olympus
Company Description: Olympus is a worldwide leader in optics and imaging, serving a number of different markets including health care, industrial applications, and consumer products. Olympus America is the company's North/South American subsidiary, handling marketing, sales, and service in this region.

links to Olympus America home page Role/Projects: My official title at Olympus America was IBD (Internet Business Development) Specialist, but that's just corporate-speak for "Head Content Guy." And that's what I was—editing, writing, and maintaining virtually all of the company's massive Web site. The IBD department is a shared service for the different business units of Olympus America—acting as an internal agency handling the online presences of the many different brands, including film and filmless digital cameras, binoculars, photo printers, voice recorders, microscopes, endoscopes, industrial imaging equipment, and other health care products. IBD, in turn, worked very closely with a number of outside agencies, but mostly with Zentropy Partners (formerly Hill Holliday Interactive, which was formerly Thunder House—ain't roll-ups great?).

The Results: I managed and participated in many of the projects between Olympus and Zentropy Partners, writing content as needed (for all those different brands) and acting as a sort-of non-technical webmaster/project manager (the heavy programming was handled by Zentropy Partners, while I did the daily maintenance and troubleshooting, including the image work). I helped launch Olympus's new corporate site (with more than 3,000 pages of content that I helped write and edit), managed the launch of its first e-commerce initiatives (the Olympus Emporium, which I wrote and helped architect), and I managed a number of projects (including revamping the email management system and enhancing the online support). Of course, I also wrote a number of new features and products once the sites were up and running (creating them from legacy brochures or brief assets that I fleshed-out). If it's up there on the site, chances are I've at least had a hand in it.
